The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and the rule of law following a fatal shooting incident in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo.
According to a statement signed by Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer on Monday, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja said the police acknowledged public concern over the incident, which resulted in the death of a citizen, and also noted the position earlier expressed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The police said while it recognises the statutory responsibility of the customs service in anti-smuggling operations, the protection of human life remains the highest priority of the state.
According to the force, the Inspector-General of Police has taken note of the NCS’s request for a harmonised investigation and assured both the agency and the public that the probe would be conducted with thorough forensic diligence.
The investigation is currently being handled by the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department.
Police authorities disclosed that two suspects, Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, remain in custody as part of efforts to ensure a transparent inquiry into the incident.
Recovered items, including a Beretta pistol and 9mm ballistic evidence, are undergoing specialised forensic analysis as investigators attempt to establish the facts and determine compliance with operational Rules of Engagement.
The police also stressed that relations between the NPF and the Nigeria Customs Service remain professional and cooperative, adding that the incident should not be viewed as a conflict between the two agencies.
According to the force, the matter is being treated strictly as one of individual professional accountability while both institutions work together to ensure justice.
The police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that the investigation would be concluded in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
