No Request From ADC faction to Use Eagle Square, Claims Baseless — Wike

Barrister Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed claims that any political party was denied access to the Eagle Square, describing the allegations as baseless.

Speaking on Monday, Wike said no formal request had been submitted by any group, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to use the facility.

“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development. If it is the ADC, such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy,” he said.

The minister explained that access to the Eagle Square is subject to due process, which includes submitting a formal application through the Abuja Investments Company Limited and payment of the required fees.

He added that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome is not under the control of the FCT Administration but the Sports Commission, stressing that different authorities manage public facilities in the capital.

According to him, political parties such as the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party had previously used public venues after following the stipulated procedures.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, noting that key road projects are expected to be completed by May 15.

He said contractors had assured that road construction would be finalised within the timeline, while installation of streetlights would be completed before the end of May.

At Gaduwa, the minister disclosed that he had directed the installation of protective mesh to prevent encroachment on road corridors, adding that streetlight works were progressing steadily.

In Wassa, he said plans were underway to relocate informal sector operators, particularly traders from the Apo Mechanic Village, to a new facility with improved infrastructure.

“This project is aimed at enhancing the working conditions of artisans and fulfilling long-standing commitments to the informal sector,” he said.

Reacting to reports of a windstorm that affected the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Wike clarified that the structure did not collapse, noting that only parts of the roof were damaged.

“The terminal is intact. What happened was that strong winds blew off some roofing sheets. Repairs are already ongoing,” he said, adding that no casualties were recorded.

The minister attributed the steady progress of projects in the FCT to effective collaboration between the government and contractors, supported by prompt payment of contractual obligations.
