FG Rejects US Security Concerns, Reaffirms Safety Across Nigeria

The Federal Government on Thursday dismissed concerns triggered by a recent advisory from the United States authorising the departure of non-emergency personnel from its embassy in Abuja, describing the move as a routine precaution that does not reflect the country’s overall security situation.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation,  in a statement issued through Rabiu Ibrahim, his Special Assistant on Media, reassured citizens and the international community that Nigeria remains stable, with public institutions functioning effectively and no disruption to governance, economic activities, or daily life.

He emphasised that the United States’ decision was based on its internal protocols and should not be interpreted as evidence of widespread insecurity across the country.

“While we acknowledge isolated security challenges in some areas, there is no general breakdown of law and order, and the vast majority of the country remains stable,” Idris said.

The minister highlighted ongoing efforts by security agencies, noting that coordinated military operations, intelligence-led interventions, and improved inter-agency collaboration have continued to yield results.

According to him, recent operations in affected regions have disrupted criminal networks, reduced the activities of armed groups, and improved safety in vulnerable communities.

“Our security agencies remain actively engaged in protecting lives and property, and the results of these efforts are increasingly evident,” he added.

The government also reaffirmed Nigeria’s openness to global engagement, maintaining that the country remains a viable destination for business, travel, and investment.

Idris noted that ongoing economic reforms are strengthening investor confidence and sustaining active engagement with foreign partners.

While acknowledging the right of countries to issue travel advisories, the Federal Government called for balanced and up-to-date reporting that reflects developments on the ground.

“We encourage our international partners to continuously engage with Nigerian authorities to obtain a more comprehensive and current understanding of the situation,” he said.

Reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the government assured citizens and visitors of its resolve to sustain security improvements and maintain Nigeria’s status as a safe and welcoming destination.
