Ogun Police Dismiss Report on Ajuwon Tenancy Dispute, Clarify Assault Case

The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed as misleading a publication titled “Ogun Police, Tenants and the Peril of Criminalising Civil Disputes,” insisting that the matter in question involved allegations of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, not a tenancy dispute.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command said the publication circulating online distorted facts surrounding an incident reported in the Ajuwon area of Ogun State.

According to the police, the case was reported on April 9, 2026, by a family member of the victim, who alleged that the victim was involved in an altercation with tenants over electricity-related issues, resulting in a physical confrontation and a subsequent medical emergency involving the landlord.

The command stated that officers followed standard investigative procedures by inviting the parties involved, assessing the scene, and obtaining statements from all concerned persons.

It noted that the matter was treated strictly as a criminal complaint bordering on assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, with all actions taken in line with due process and constitutional provisions.

The police further explained that after preliminary investigations, the matter was handled at the divisional level, while the parties were granted administrative bail in accordance with established procedures.

According to the statement, efforts were also made to de-escalate tensions and facilitate an amicable resolution between the parties.

The command added that the complainant later withdrew the case through a written letter confirming that the dispute had been amicably resolved.

“For the avoidance of doubt, at no time were any persons unlawfully detained,” the statement said, stressing that all police actions, including lawful invitation, investigation, and bail procedures, were carried out within constitutional and procedural limits.

The police also disclosed that its Public Relations Officer had responded to media inquiries on the matter before the controversial publication was released, accusing the report of deliberate misrepresentation and selective interpretation of facts aimed at creating a false narrative.

The command warned against attempts to distort facts and misrepresent lawful police actions, saying such reports could undermine public confidence in policing and due process.

It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, neutrality, and adherence to the rule of law, while urging members of the public to rely on verified information from official police communication channels.
