IGP Disu Orders Statewide Town Hall Meetings to Strengthen Community Policing

IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu,
Inspector-General of Police, has directed Commissioners of Police across the country to intensify community policing efforts through regular town hall meetings and improved engagement with residents.

The directive was issued during an emergency conference with Commissioners of Police and members of the press at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the IGP, effective policing can only succeed with the trust, cooperation, and active participation of the public, stressing that security is a collective responsibility that requires strong collaboration between the police and communities.

Disu directed all Commissioners of Police to organise regular interactive sessions with key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions, women groups, and other community-based organisations.

He also instructed police commissioners to make their contact details accessible to recognised community leaders in their states to improve communication, enhance responsiveness, and strengthen public confidence in policing operations.

The IGP noted that community-driven intelligence remains critical in tackling crime and emerging security threats, adding that stronger police-community relationships would improve public safety and operational effectiveness nationwide.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to a people-centred and accountable policing system built on partnership, transparency, and mutual trust.
