The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the government described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history, dedicated to honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.

The statement noted that the contributions of pro-democracy activists and citizens continue to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving and strengthening democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

According to him, the administration remains steadfast in its resolve to uphold these principles while deepening democratic institutions across the country.

Tunji-Ojo also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property nationwide.

He emphasized that a secure and stable environment remains essential for the sustenance of democracy and the achievement of national development goals.

The minister called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and renewed commitment to national unity, responsible citizenship, and lawful conduct.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he stated.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the democratic struggle that culminated in the restoration of civil rule in Nigeria and to commemorate the sacrifices of individuals who championed democratic governance in the country.
