Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, has pledged to uphold the customs and values of the Bauchi Emirate after he was installed as the Jigon Bauchi by the Bauchi Emirate Council.
Jonathan received the traditional title on Tuesday from the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, during a turbaning ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi.
Accepting the honour, Jonathan expressed appreciation to the Emir and people of Bauchi State for the recognition, describing the title as a privilege he would cherish.
“I deeply appreciate this honour and the confidence reposed in me by the Bauchi Emirate. I will respect the customs and traditions of the Emirate Council and uphold the values associated with this title,” he said.
The former president was honoured for his contributions to democracy, peace and national unity in Nigeria.
The Emir, while conferring the title, described Jonathan as a leader whose conduct in public office and commitment to peaceful coexistence remained exemplary.
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who led a delegation of government officials, political associates and other dignitaries to the ceremony, commended the Emirate Council for recognising the former president.
Mohammed said the honour reflected Jonathan’s contribution to democratic governance and his efforts towards promoting peace and stability in the country.
The governor added that Jonathan’s leadership had earned him respect beyond political, ethnic and regional boundaries.
The ceremony attracted traditional rulers, title holders, government officials, political leaders and other dignitaries from Bauchi State and beyond.
