The Premier League has clarified the decision to award Erling Haaland’s goal during Manchester City’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Haaland appeared to be offside when he converted Antoine Semenyo’s cross in the second half, prompting the assistant referee to immediately raise his flag.
However, the decision was overturned following a lengthy review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), who advised referee Michael Oliver to award the goal.
According to the Premier League Match Centre, the review established that Haaland was in an onside position when the ball was played.
The Match Centre explained on X: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.
“The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn’t play the ball.”
