Kebbi NLC Seeks N70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kebbi State Council, has demanded a minimum monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public sector workers to cushion the impact of rising transportation costs.

The NLC said it would formally present the demand to Governor Nasir Idris after concluding consultations with its affiliate unions and members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

The state chairman of the union, Murtala Usman, disclosed this on Monday, saying the proposal was reached during a stakeholders’ meeting involving affiliated labour unions.

According to Usman, the proposed allowance should cover all categories of public sector workers, including teachers, health workers, local government employees and other civil servants.

“We are demanding a minimum of N70,000 or above, and we want the allowance to cover all categories of workers without discrimination,” he said.

Usman said the union had commenced discussions with lawmakers in the state to secure their support before presenting the proposal to the state government.

He explained that the rising cost of transportation had significantly increased the financial burden on workers, particularly those who commute long distances to their places of work.

The labour leader said the proposed allowance would help workers cope with escalating transport fares and provide some relief from the pressure on their monthly incomes.

The NLC is expected to meet with Governor Idris soon to formally table the demand and discuss possible measures to support workers across the state.
