The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory chapter, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.

The decision was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held in Gwagwalada. The communiqué was jointly signed by the State Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, the State Secretary, Margaret Jethro, and the State Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye.
The union directed teachers to fully comply with the strike action and await further instructions, while advising parents to keep their children at home until further notice.
According to the union, the action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 11, which lapsed without a satisfactory response from authorities.
While acknowledging the Minister’s implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage and payment of nine months’ arrears to primary school teachers, the union expressed concern over unresolved issues affecting teachers’ welfare.
It noted that a committee set up by the FCT Administration in July 2025 to harmonise outstanding entitlements and recommend lasting solutions had submitted its report in August 2025, but the report had yet to be made public or implemented.
The union said the prolonged delay, coupled with the prevailing economic challenges, necessitated the industrial action. It also demanded the removal of the “vacancies” condition attached to the promotion of classroom teachers and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission.
The SWEC further lamented that despite the initial ultimatum and an additional 28-day grace period granted to authorities, there had been no tangible response to the issues raised.
“Following exhaustive deliberations, the Council resolved that all public primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT shall, with effect from Monday, proceed on an indefinite strike until our demands are met,” the communiqué stated.
