PENGASSAN strike: Blackout looms as National grid output falls massively

By our Reporter

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced that electricity generation on the national grid has dropped to 3,200 megawatts (MW) following industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

According to NISO, the strike disrupted gas supplies, cutting available generation from over 4,300MW. To stabilize the system, the operator said it deployed contingency measures, including ramping up production from major hydro stations, which provided an additional 400MW to cushion the shortfall from gas-fired plants.

The agency explained that real-time load adjustments are being implemented to balance supply and demand, alongside the deployment of reactive power compensation and reserve monitoring to protect system integrity.

It added that selective load shedding is only applied as a last resort to prevent total grid collapse and ensure equitable power distribution.

NISO stressed that these interventions have minimized the impact of the labour action, safeguarded supply to critical facilities, and prevented a nationwide blackout.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to proactive grid management and reliable electricity delivery across the country.
