Court Adjourns Ruling on El-Rufai’s Bail Application to June

The Kaduna State High Court has postponed ruling on the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the first week of June 2026.

The matter came up on Tuesday before Justice Darius Khobo in the ongoing trial involving multiple charges of alleged financial crimes and abuse of office brought against the former governor by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

El-Rufai was present in court, arriving around 9 a.m. in a convoy accompanied by operatives of the ICPC and the Department of State Services.

Security was tightened within the court premises, while supporters of the former governor gathered outside the courtroom during proceedings.

Speaking after the session, counsel to El-Rufai, Ukpon Akpan, criticised the repeated adjournment of the bail hearing, describing it as politically motivated.

The court subsequently fixed the first week of June 2026 for ruling on the bail request.

The latest adjournment comes weeks after the Federal High Court in Kaduna granted El-Rufai bail over the corruption charges filed against him by the ICPC.

In that earlier ruling, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa admitted the former governor to bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum and ordered that he remain in ICPC custody pending the fulfilment of the conditions.

The court also directed that the sureties must deposit their international passports, while one surety must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 15 and the other a recognised traditional ruler.

Justice Aikawa had reserved ruling on the bail application after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, before granting the request.

The fresh postponement means El-Rufai will now wait until June for the latest decision in the ongoing proceedings.
