IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu,
Inspector-General of Police, has approved a comprehensive restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit as part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening internal accountability.

The reform, according to the Force, is designed to refocus the Unit on its core mandate, address operational inefficiencies, and reposition it as a more credible and effective oversight mechanism across Commands, Formations, and Departments.

As part of the reorganisation, the Unit has been streamlined and reinforced to support proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel and operations nationwide. The new structure also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda.

In a related development, the IGP approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar, as Head of the Police Monitoring Unit to lead the operations of the restructured team.

Before his appointment, Abubakar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Police Commands, where he was involved in several high-profile investigations and institutional reforms.

The Force described him as a seasoned and community-oriented officer known for promoting professionalism, transparency, and effective policing strategies.

Speaking on the development, the IGP said the restructuring is aimed at entrenching discipline, professionalism, and transparency within the Force, noting that the Monitoring Unit will play a critical role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the delivery of a more professional, accountable, and citizen-focused policing system.
