Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded the name of Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assemblyfor screening and confirmation as the new deputy governor.

The nomination was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mustapha Muhammad, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary.
According to the statement, the nomination was made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy governor when the office becomes vacant.
The deputy governorship seat became vacant after the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo, the former Deputy Governor on March 27, 2026.
The governor said the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state and urged lawmakers to grant the necessary approval.
Muhammad described Garo as an experienced administrator with more than two decades in public service and politics.
He said the 48-year-old politician had served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
Garo also previously served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State and as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
He was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.
The statement added that the nomination is part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in the state.
