At least 14 members of the Nigerien Defence and Security Forces have been killed after troops pursuing terrorists were caught in an ambush following an attack on a National Guard post in southeastern Niger.
The attack occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday in N’Guigmi, Diffa Region, when heavily armed terrorists reportedly advanced from the Sabon Carré area and launched an assault on a National Guard position near the town’s cemetery.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the incident on his official X handle, the initial attack triggered a military response as reinforcement troops moved to chase the fleeing attackers.
However, the pursuing forces reportedly encountered a carefully planned ambush about one kilometre south of the National Guard position, leading to heavy casualties.
Preliminary reports indicate that 14 security personnel were killed, including 10 soldiers of the Niger Armed Forces (FAN), among them an officer, and four members of the National Guard.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the attack, while efforts to combat terrorist activities in the Diffa Region continue. No
