The Global Anglican Council has approved
Abuja, Nigeria, as the headquarters of the Global Anglican Communion, in a decision aimed at strengthening the administration, fellowship and ministry of Anglicans across the world.
The decision was reached at a meeting of the Council in Recife, Brazil, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, according to the Chairman of the Global Anglican Council, The Most Revd Dr Laurent Mbanda. He said the choice of Abuja was significant because the Nigerian capital already holds an important place in the recent history of the global Anglican movement.
Mbanda recalled that the G26 gathering in Abuja earlier this year produced the Abuja Affirmation, which declared that Gafcon had reordered the Anglican Communion into a truly Global Church. He said it was therefore fitting that Abuja, where the new chapter was clearly articulated, should also become the physical home of the Global Anglican Communion.
The Chairman explained that although modern technology had made it possible for Anglicans across nations and continents to work together, the Council considered a physical headquarters and administrative hub valuable to the shared life and mission of the global fellowship.
He said the headquarters could eventually develop beyond an administrative centre into a place for gathering, training and equipping leaders as the Communion continues its mission of proclaiming the gospel and building up the Christian Church.
Mbanda noted that significant work remained to be done in establishing the new headquarters and expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) as discussions begin on developing the facility.
He said the Global Anglican Council hoped that from Abuja, the Communion would be able to serve Anglicans across different parts of the world while supporting the growth and strengthening of the Church globally.
He called on members of the Communion to pray for wisdom and guidance as plans for the new headquarters take shape.
