Police Threaten Prosecution Over Repeated Highway Blockades

By Jelili Gbadamosi

The Kebbi State Police Command has threatened to prosecute individuals and groups involved in blocking the Kebbi–Sokoto Federal Highway, following a fresh disruption of traffic along the route.

The warning came after motorists and other road users were stranded for about three hours on Friday, October 9, 2026, when the highway was blocked. A similar blockade was reported on September 23.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the Commissioner of Police, Umar M. Hadejia, viewed the repeated disruptions as a serious concern.

Usman said the blockade affected the free movement of motorists and goods and also prevented people seeking urgent medical attention from accessing their destinations.

The command advised residents with grievances to seek redress through lawful means, including engaging elected representatives, traditional rulers and the Police Community Relations Committee.

It warned that anyone who organises or participates in future blockades would be investigated and may face prosecution under the law.

The commissioner also appealed to residents to respect the rights of other citizens and refrain from actions capable of disrupting the movement of people and goods.

Parents and guardians were equally urged to caution their children and wards against taking part in unlawful gatherings or activities that could lead to legal consequences.
