Dele Farotimi, Human rights lawyer and activist, has formally announced his exit from the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere.

Farotimi announced his decision in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday.

In the statement titled “My Exit from Afenifere”, Farotimi said his association with the organization dates back to 1998 when he served as the pioneer Chairman of Binukonu.

“Thank you for the opportunity you have given me over the years to share my thoughts, convictions and vision for our dear country. Throughout this journey, my association with Afenifere has been an important part of my public engagement and contribution to our collective aspirations,” he said.

He continued: “My association with Afenifere dates back to 1998, when I had the privilege of serving as the pioneer Chairman of Binukonu. It has been a long journey, and I remain grateful for the experiences and opportunities it afforded me, as well as the platform it provided to contribute to our collective aspirations. However, every journey, no matter how long, must eventually come to an end.”

“Today, I bring my association with Afenifere to a close. I hereby formally sever all ties with the organisation and its leadership. Henceforth, the leadership of Afenifere does not represent my views, and I no longer speak for or identify with its positions or actions. There is a time and place for everything under the sun, and this is not the time to offer the reasons for this painful but necessary decision.”

Farotimi said he has chosen not to offer further explanation and asked the public to respect his decision.

He however reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of the organization.

“My commitment to the birth of a nation that is founded on the social democratic principles of the Action Group, (Afenifere) remains unchanged, and I shall remain undaunted in my pursuit of these principles and ideals,” he stated.
