FMC Abeokuta Unions Begin 72-Hour Strike Over Attack on Laboratory Scientist

By our Reporter

Healthcare workers’ unions at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta have commenced a 72-hour warning strike following the stabbing of a laboratory scientist within the hospital.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) condemned the incident and called on the Medical Director and hospital management to take immediate action, ensure accountability through due process, and strengthen security measures to prevent a recurrence.

The position was jointly endorsed by key unions, including the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research and Allied Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

The unions warned that failure to address their concerns could further disrupt industrial harmony and erode workers’ confidence in the hospital’s ability to guarantee their safety.

According to the unions, the safety and security of healthcare workers remain non-negotiable, as they called for an end to acts of violence against medical personnel within the facility.
