The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a cable vandalism gang and recovered several cut-to-size armoured cables in Guzape, Abuja.
The suspects, identified as Sagir Abubakar of Kuchigoro Village and Seidu Umar Bello, were arrested following a surveillance patrol by operatives of Guzape Division along Walter Ofonagoro Street in the early hours of Saturday, October 31, 2026.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the operatives, at about 1:30 a.m., sighted a Lexus SUV and a Toyota Sienna parked under suspicious circumstances and approached to question the occupants.
However, the occupants allegedly fled in the vehicles upon sighting the police, abandoning one of their accomplices, who attempted to escape on foot. The operatives pursued and arrested him.
A search of the surrounding area led to the recovery of several cut-to-size armoured cables, while further investigations resulted in the arrest of Bello, who had initially escaped in one of the vehicles.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspects were members of a gang allegedly targeting secluded locations within the FCT to vandalise public and private infrastructure.
The police said investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspects’ activities, identify other members of the gang and arrest those still at large. The arrested suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
