Edo Seeks Alternative to Grid Over Power Supply Shortage

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has said his administration is putting measures in place to decentralise power supply and reduce dependence on the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

He made this known at the 52nd Annual Convention of the Uromi Community Association of Nigeria (UCAN) held on Monday in Uromi, Edo State.

According to the governor, erratic electricity supply from BEDC has become a major challenge for residents and businesses across the state.

“The issue of electricity is very important because it has become a problem for us as a people. We flagged off 100MW of power in Benin City, we will also have 100MW here too,” he said.

He added that the planned projects would support efforts to decentralise electricity generation and improve access across different parts of the state.

“The inauguration of 100MW of power in Edo Central will enable us to decentralise the power sector and ensure our people in Afemai and Edo Central enjoy electricity,” he added.

Earlier, the traditional ruler of Uromi, the Ojuoromi, Anselm Edenojie II, highlighted some of the challenges facing the community, including the abandonment of the Ahojie Township Stadium, and called on the government to address them.
