The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, organised a sensitisation programme for teachers and students in public secondary schools on sexual and gender-based violence, bullying, cultism and drug abuse, as part of its commitment to promoting safe, inclusive and conducive learning environments.

The programme, which was held on Wednesday at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, brought together education stakeholders, government officials, teachers and students to raise awareness on the dangers of these social vices and to encourage positive values and responsible behaviour among young people.

Delivering the keynote address, Alli-Balogun, Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe spaces where students can learn and thrive without fear of violence, intimidation or harmful influences. The Commissioner emphasised the importance of collective responsibility in addressing sexual and gender-based violence, bullying, cultism and drug abuse, noting that parents, teachers, communities and government agencies all have critical roles to play in safeguarding the future of young people.
“Education is not merely about acquiring academic knowledge.” It is about nurturing responsible, confident, morally upright, and productive citizens,” the Commissioner stated.

Alli-Balogun charged teachers to be vigilant, compassionate, and professional, stressing that they are mentors, counsellors, and protectors. “Never ignore complaints of bullying or abuse, no matter how insignificant they may appear. Every child deserves to be heard, protected, and treated with dignity,” he said, urging the students to report abuse and stand up for classmates facing intimidation.

Earlier in her welcome address, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adebgite, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, said that the programme underscores the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to create a safe, secure, inclusive, and conducive learning environment that extends beyond academic excellence to shaping disciplined and morally upright citizens.

She emphasised that every student deserves to feel protected, respected, and empowered. She encouraged parents and guardians to remain actively involved, monitor both online and offline activities, and build trust that encourages open communication.

Appreciating the partners, the Permanent Secretary commended the Lagos State DSVA and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development for their collaboration in advancing child protection and promoting positive values across public secondary schools.

Participants also received insightful presentations from representatives of the Domestic Violence Office and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The speaker educated teachers and students on the various forms of sexual and gender-based domestic violence, the consequences of bullying, the dangers associated with cultism and substance abuse, and the importance of speaking up, seeking help and supporting victims. They also highlighted available reporting mechanisms and support services for those affected.
