The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the death of 10 police officers during an encounter with heavily armed suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident occurred at about 9:25 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, when police operatives intercepted and engaged suspected bandits reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi States along the Rafin Makuku axis.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, at least 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.
However, the Force suffered a significant loss as 10 police personnel were killed in the operation. Two other officers sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Two civilians were also reportedly killed during the encounter.
Reacting to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed profound grief over the loss of the officers and extended his condolences to their families and loved ones.
The IGP described the deaths as a painful loss to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, noting that the officers paid the ultimate price while defending the people they swore to protect.
He assured the families of the fallen officers that their sacrifices would not be forgotten, adding that their service and courage would continue to be honoured by the Force.
The remains of the deceased officers have since been conveyed to Birnin Kebbi, while the affected area has been brought under control.
The Police said security has also been reinforced, with additional personnel deployed to sustain operations and pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.
The Force further assured the bereaved families and injured personnel of its support, while reaffirming its determination to bring the fleeing suspects to justice.
