The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a locally made pistol during an intelligence-led operation in Akure, the state capital.

The suspect, identified as Idowu Babayemi, was apprehended by operatives of the command following credible intelligence linking him to alleged armed robbery activities within the area.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the arrest was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal.
The statement explained that police operatives received intelligence in May 2026 concerning the suspect, who resides on Abusoro Street, Akure, and was allegedly involved in criminal activities in the area.
Acting on the information, detectives placed the suspect under discreet surveillance as part of efforts to prevent criminal activities and ensure public safety.
“While operatives were on routine patrol along the Onimalu area on May 7, 2026, the suspect was sighted and immediately intercepted. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed in his possession,” the statement said.
The command noted that the operation reflects its proactive and intelligence-driven policing strategy aimed at tackling armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and other criminal activities across the state.
CP Lawal commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism, vigilance and dedication to duty.
He also reaffirmed the command’s determination to sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements threatening peace and security in Ondo State.
The commissioner further appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support and commitment to strengthening intelligence-based policing nationwide.
The police said investigations are ongoing and the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
The command urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information, assuring the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
