The Ondo State Police Command has issued a security alert ahead of the planned “7/7” cult celebrations, warning criminal groups against any unlawful gathering, procession or initiation capable of disrupting public peace across the state.
The Command said intelligence at its disposal indicated that some cult groups were planning activities to mark the annual “7/7” celebration, a development it said could endanger lives and threaten public safety.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to identified flashpoints and other strategic locations across the state.
According to the Command, the operation involves personnel from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), State Intelligence Department, Mobile Police Force, as well as officers from various Area Commands and Divisions.
The operatives have been directed to carry out intensive visibility policing, surveillance, confidence-building patrols and intelligence-led raids to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The Police warned that it would not tolerate unlawful gatherings, public display of cult insignia, brandishing of weapons, violent processions or any act capable of causing fear and panic among residents.
It stressed that anyone found engaging in such activities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command also advised parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against participating in cult-related activities, while urging owners of hotels, lounges, event centres, bars and recreational facilities not to allow their premises to be used for gatherings linked to cult groups.
It warned that individuals or businesses found aiding or harbouring criminal elements would face prosecution.
CP Ohagwu further appealed to community leaders, youth organisations, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
While reassuring residents of adequate security across the state, the Commissioner urged the public to go about their lawful activities without fear, assuring them that the Command remained fully prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to any attempt by criminal elements to undermine the prevailing peace in Ondo State.
