Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, representing Edo Central Senatorial district, vacant.
This followed the elevation of Senator Monday Okpebolo to the position of Governor of Edo State.
Akpabio also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections as soon as possible to fill the vacant seat.
This move is aimed at ensuring that the people of Edo Central Senatorial district continue to have representation in the Senate.
The Senate had suspended Order 12 (1) of its standing rules to permit the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebolo, to bid farewell.
Okpebolo, who previously represented Edo Central in the 10th Senate, is accompanied by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, and former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Matthew Urhoghide, who also served as Okpebholo’s campaign Director General.
The Senate has also appointed Senator Olajide Ipisagba, representing Ondo North, as the new chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement, replacing Senator Monday Okpebolo, who held the position while in the Senate.
