Army Says Rape Allegation Against Depot Osogbo Personnel Is Unconfirmed, Urges Rape Victims to Come Forward

The Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo has described as “unconfirmed and potentially misleading” allegations of rape levelled against some of its recently passed-out personnel.

In a follow-up statement issued on Friday by Major Ibrahim Yahaya, Assistant Director Army Public Relations, the Depot said a Board of Inquiry earlier constituted is still ongoing.

“The Nigerian Army remains fully committed to a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into all allegations of unprofessional conduct. Any personnel found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the Armed Forces Act,” the statement read.

The Army was reacting to rape allegations attributed to the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, and amplified on social media.

“At this time, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo has not received any formal complaint, medical report, or credible evidence from any alleged victim, witness, or the University Management to substantiate the claim,” Major Yahaya stated.

The Army urged any alleged victim(s) or eyewitness(es) with verifiable information including videos, photographs, medical records, or statements to submit them confidentially to the Board of Inquiry at Depot HQ, Osogbo, or through the Army Public Relations Office.

“Your identity and safety will be protected in line with military and legal procedures. This is the only credible path to identifying and prosecuting the culprits if they exist,” it added.

The Depot also appealed to the media, NANS, the University Management, and the public to avoid spreading unverified information, saying “sensationalism and disinformation only hinder the search for truth and can cause unnecessary panic.”

It reaffirmed its commitment to civil-military cooperation, the protection of students, and human rights, and promised further updates as the investigation progresses.
