The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing shots into the air during a confrontation with traders at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2026, at about 1:50 p.m., following a distress call to the Kubwa Police Division reporting that an unidentified man armed with a pistol was shooting sporadically into the air.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene and, after concerted efforts, disarmed and arrested the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly went to the market armed with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife. During an ensuing argument with the traders, he allegedly fired several shots into the air.

The police said a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect, who remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged operatives of sister security agencies to exercise restraint and notify the police divisions responsible for areas where they intend to conduct authorised operations within the territory.

According to the command, the measure is intended to ensure proper operational coordination and prevent avoidable clashes among security personnel.

The police urged residents to report emergencies through the command’s dedicated lines.
