African Action Congress (AAC) has raised alarm over the whereabouts of its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, following an alleged attack by gunmen in Ekiti State.
This was disclosed In a press statement issued on Friday by Rex Elanu, AAC National Publicity Secretary, the party said Sowore and his team were attacked at a restaurant identified as Tawakal-Tu in Ekiti State by gunmen whom eyewitnesses described as thugs of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party said Sowore’s whereabouts are currently unknown, raising serious concerns about his safety.
“We call on the Ekiti State Governor, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police to immediately establish Sowore’s whereabouts, guarantee his safety, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure their prompt prosecution,” the statement said.
The AAC described Sowore as one of President Bola Tinubu’s fiercest critics and a leading voice of opposition, adding that it will not accept any attempt to intimidate or attack him for challenging the political establishment.
“Let it be established that we will hold the Ekiti State Governor, the IGP, and the relevant security authorities responsible if anything happens to our presidential candidate or if those behind this assault are not promptly arrested and prosecuted,” the party said.
The AAC threatened to mobilise mass action at the Ekiti State Government House if authorities fail to act urgently.
“We demand immediate action, not excuses. If the authorities fail to act with the urgency this situation demands, the AAC will have no choice but to mobilise a massive action at the Ekiti State Government House to demand answers, accountability, and justice,” Elanu said.
“Political thuggery must not become a weapon for silencing opposition in Nigeria. Sowore’s safety is non-negotiable,” the party added.
As of press time, the Ekiti State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and the APC have not issued official reactions to the allegation.
