House of Representatives to Vote on State Police Bill on Thursday

The Nigerian House of Representatives is set to take a decisive step toward establishing state police as lawmakers prepare to vote on key constitutional amendment bills, including provisions for decentralized policing.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, announced at a media briefing shortly after plenary that the House of Representatives has decided to prioritise the establishment of state police ahead of other bills.

He added that the House has directed all members currently outside Abuja on oversight functions to suspend their activities and return to the parliament on Thursday for the voting procedure.
The state police bill is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker and 14 other members of the House.
