The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to introduce immediate measures to cushion workers and households from the impact of rising petrol prices, which have pushed pump prices to about N1,430 per litre in major cities.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the latest increase was worsening the cost-of-living crisis, warning that higher fuel prices would continue to drive up transportation fares and the prices of essential goods and services.
In a statement, Ajaero called on the government to provide reasonable wage awards to workers as part of measures to create a buffer against the economic impact of the fuel price increase.
He also asked the government to ensure adequate crude oil supply to local refineries through naira-denominated sales and expand national petroleum storage capacity to strengthen the country’s ability to respond to energy emergencies.
Ajaero said the effect of rising petrol prices extended beyond transportation, noting that increased logistics costs could translate into higher expenses for food, rent, school fees and other basic needs.
According to him, the latest increase is particularly concerning because it comes at a time when government efforts to encourage marketers to reduce pump prices in line with international crude oil prices had begun yielding results.
The NLC president said implementing the proposed measures would not only provide relief to workers but could also support job creation, increase economic value and strengthen the country’s response to emerging security challenges.
