President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

In a statement issued on May 10, 2026, President Tinubu described Pa Fasoranti as a symbol of integrity, discipline, honesty, and dedicated service to Nigeria, praising his immense contributions to education, politics, democracy, and national development.
The President said Fasoranti’s life reflects uncommon service and principled leadership, noting that the nonagenarian had remained committed to noble causes throughout his life.
Tinubu highlighted Fasoranti’s educational background, noting that he studied English and Geography at University of Ibadan, obtained a postgraduate diploma in Education from the University of Hull, and later earned a Master’s degree in Education Administration and School Management from Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
The President also commended the elder statesman’s contributions to education through his service as a teacher and the establishment of several schools in Ondo State, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.
Reflecting on Fasoranti’s political journey, Tinubu described him as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and a committed adherent of the Yoruba Omoluabi ethos.
He noted that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983, where he was recognised for integrity and financial prudence.
Tinubu further praised the elder statesman’s role during Nigeria’s military era, describing him as one of the leading voices against dictatorship and a prominent advocate for democracy, Yoruba unity, and development.
The President recalled that Fasoranti survived an assassination attempt during the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha and remained steadfast in his opposition to oppression.
He also acknowledged personal tragedies faced by the Afenifere leader, including the death of his wife and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
Tinubu expressed gratitude to Fasoranti for his prayers and support during his presidential ambition, recalling a visit to the elder statesman in Akure before the 2023 election campaign.
According to the President, Fasoranti had prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would live to witness Tinubu’s emergence as President.
The President prayed for continued good health and long life for the Afenifere leader, while thanking him for his enduring service to Nigeria and support for the Renewed Hope administration.
