52 Students Arrested for Participating in Edo Protest

By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

Over 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, were arrested in a midnight raid for protesting against the rising cases of kidnapping in Edo State.

They were arraigned in court and remanded in prison custody for 14 days, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)

The students were protesting the growing insecurity in Ekpoma, where several residents have been abducted and killed.
The protest turned violent, with reports of looting and vandalism, including damage to the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma. The police claim the students were involved in the violence, while defense lawyers argue the charges are bogus and an attempt to suppress peaceful protest
