African Union Congratulates Tanzania’s Re-Elected President

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her victory in Tanzania’s presidential election.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, which expressed deep regret over the loss of lives during post-electoral protests and extended sincere condolences to the victims’ families.

He emphasised the need to uphold fundamental rights and freedoms, including peaceful assembly and expression, urging authorities to protect these within the legal framework.

He said Citizens are encouraged to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly.

The Chairperson invoked the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, highlighting respect for the rule of law, human rights, fundamental freedoms, and political pluralism as essential to democratic stability.

The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Tanzania’s government and people in maintaining peace, national cohesion, and democracy.
