The Delta State Police Command has demoted two police officers found guilty of extortion after they were captured in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, approved the outcome of the orderly room trial of Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to the ‘C’ Division, Asaba.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, attracted widespread public outrage after a video surfaced online showing the officers allegedly collecting money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the station premises.
According to the Command, the officers were found guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
As punishment, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Miracle Ehirim was demoted to the rank of Constable.
CP Oyeniyi said the disciplinary action reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to accountability and professionalism.
He reiterated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion and other forms of professional misconduct.
The Commissioner stressed that the IGP has expressly prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations across the country.
He warned that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, adding that any officer found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary action.
Oyeniyi urged officers and men of the Command to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and respect for the rights of citizens, noting that the sanctions imposed on the two officers should serve as a deterrent to others.
He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit, reaffirming the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to discipline, transparency and restoring public confidence in policing.
