Alia Clarifies FG’s Ranching Plan, Says No Imposition on Benue

Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Benue State Governor,, has assured residents that the Federal Government’s planned pilot ranching programme will not be imposed on the state or its people.

Alia gave the assurance while addressing concerns surrounding the proposed initiative, saying his administration would protect the interests of residents and ensure that government programmes reflect their wishes.

According to the governor, the people of Benue have already expressed their position on ranching, stressing that the Federal Government would not compel the state to accept the programme.

“The Federal Government is not forcing the state to have cow ranching. Nobody is forcing anything on anybody at any stage of this,” Alia said.

He also called for a broader interpretation of the term “ranching”, noting that it should not automatically be associated with cattle alone.

The governor pointed out that Benue has other livestock, including goats and sheep, which he said could also be developed as sources of economic opportunities for residents.

He urged stakeholders to view the proposed programme within the broader context of livestock development rather than assuming it would automatically lead to the establishment of cattle ranches.

Alia also advised residents to seek clarification from relevant authorities before reacting to government announcements.

He warned that acting on assumptions and spreading unverified information could create unnecessary tension in the state, particularly on an issue that has generated significant public interest.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to peace, the protection of residents and policies that prioritise the interests of the people.

“This is a people-oriented government, and everything we are doing must be people-directed,” he said.
