The battle between who becomes the Director General of the World Trade Organization may seem not have been put to rest despite a clear win of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,(NOI) a dual citizenship holder of Nigeria-America and her South Korean rival.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a former Nigerian Coordinating Minister of Finance on Wednesday won the majority support of 164 members.
Against the background that trailed the news of NOI emergence still suffer major setback as the US delegation opposed her endorsement throwing support behind South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee in her place.
As it stands now, Mrs Okonjo-iweala chances of being declared the next general election director general of the world trade body is tied to United State Election as that might also be a major determinant of who gets the nod of the US president.
Analyst has contributed to argue that democratic principles should be upheld and the will of the majority should use in confirming NOI who polled the majority and not the preferred candidate of the US.
Should in case Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala is endorsed and declared for the role of WTO DG, this will put her in the place of pride as the first African Woman to be the director having enjoyed largely the support of major groups of trade ambassadors in Geneva.
As Africans jubilates the recognition and support of countries in Africa, Caribbean, the European Union, China, Japan and Australia, it is expected that after the November 3 election of the United States between Joe Biden and the current leading candidate, Donald Trump, the choice of the New DG will be announced.
The world awaits the announcement of the World Trade organization Director General and history will never forgets the decision of the United State if done in good faith or otherwise.
