IGP Disu Appoints SP Awu Fidelis Jonah as Head of Complaint Response Unit

IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has appointed Superintendent of Police (SP) Awu Fidelis Jonah as the substantive Head of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force.

The appointment is aimed at strengthening accountability, responsiveness and public confidence in the police complaint-management system, according to a statement issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.

Awu is an experienced police officer with expertise in public complaints management, criminal investigation, supervision, leadership and international peacekeeping. He was among the pioneer members of the CRU and served in various capacities, rising to the position of Second-in-Command before his latest appointment.

His experience in the unit covers complaint handling, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.

Academically, Awu holds a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University; and a Master’s Degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

He also completed the Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos, and has undergone relevant training in human rights and professional policing.

Between 2022 and 2023, Awu served as Deputy Contingent Commander of Formed Police Unit Contingent 11 in Mogadishu, Somalia, where he gained additional leadership, operational and multinational policing experience.

The IGP charged the new CRU head to maintain professionalism, ensure prompt responses to public complaints, uphold human rights and promote effective engagement with members of the public. He also tasked him with ensuring that complaints against police personnel are handled transparently and in line with established procedures.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening internal accountability mechanisms, improving responses to public concerns and promoting professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing.
