The Anambra State Police Command has arraigned the owner and publisher of Igbo Times Magazine and iNews, Mr. Ejike Ofoegbu, over allegations of publishing false and defamatory reports against the family of the Anambra State Governor.

The police said the defendant was brought before a competent court on Monday following investigations into a petition alleging that he published fabricated and misleading information capable of damaging the reputation of the governor’s family and inciting public disaffection.

According to the Command, the arraignment followed the transfer of the suspect from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Awka to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the court subsequently ordered the remand of the defendant in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.

The Command stated that it would not make further comments on the matter to avoid prejudicing the ongoing judicial process.

The police also urged journalists, publishers and media practitioners to verify information thoroughly before publication, stressing the need to uphold the ethics of responsible journalism and comply with existing laws regulating the dissemination of information.
