An expert, Mr. Lanre Akinpelu has proposed a sustainable, and forward-thinking initiative to revolutionize the public transportation sector in Ogun State.
The transportation expert, who noted that the soaring fuel prices in Nigeria, said the real challenge lies not in the cost of fuel but in the inefficiency of Nigeria’s transportation systems, particularly in Ogun State.
He proposed to Governor Dapo Abiodun a novel idea to address the inefficiencies in transport system, promote employment, urban renewal, and environmental sustainability.
He highlighted four strategic steps through which the government can set a new standard for transportation management in the country.
The steps include government ownership and management of public buses, phasing out rickety taxis, re-employment for taxi owners, and utilization of local resources for vehicle manufacturing.
“Government Ownership and Management of Public Buses: Recently, His Excellency announced the acquisition of hundreds of new buses for the state. I propose that these buses be directly managed by the Ogun State government. This will ensure strict regulation, maintenance, and efficiency in service delivery, reducing the likelihood of mismanagement and wear due to improper usage. Government management will also guarantee safety standards and prevent price gouging by private operators.
“Phasing Out Rickety Taxis: A significant step toward modernizing transportation in Ogun State is to address the problem of dilapidated and unsafe taxis on our roads. I propose that the state government directs all taxi owners, particularly those operating old, worn-out vehicles, to submit their cars for evaluation. In return, the government should offer fair compensation based on the current market value of each taxi. This initiative would rid our roads of unsightly vehicles while promoting safer and more reliable transportation.
“Re-Employment for Taxi Owners: To safeguard the livelihoods of taxi owners and operators, I recommend that all individuals who comply with this directive be immediately offered employment within the newly established public transportation system. These individuals could be trained and integrated as staff members responsible for managing and operating the state-owned buses. The employment structure should allow for shift work, ensuring that the transportation system runs efficiently throughout the day, similar to other well-established transport systems globally.
“Utilization of Local Resources for Vehicle Manufacturing: Lastly, I propose that Ogun State take a pioneering role in automotive recycling by inviting car plant experts—either from within or outside Nigeria—to establish a conversion and manufacturing plant. This plant would focus on recycling the submitted rickety taxis into raw materials for new vehicle parts or other useful products. Such a facility would not only create jobs for local youths but also reduce waste and promote sustainability in line with global best practices,” his proposal read partly.
He added that these recommendations, if adopted and applied by Ogun State government, would improve the living of residents in the long term.
“Under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, this proposal has the potential to improve the quality of life for our citizens, enhance road safety, create jobs, and position Ogun State as a leader in innovation and sustainable development.
“This is a rare chance to revolutionize public transport in Ogun State, not just for today but for future generations. It is a vision that blends environmental responsibility, economic opportunity, and a commitment to excellence. Let us make Ogun State the model for efficient, modern, and sustainable transportation in Nigeria,” Akinpelu said.
