Federal Fire Service Denies Allegation of Demanding Payment Before Responding to Rivers Fire Incident

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has dismissed as false a viral claim alleging that its personnel demanded payment before responding to a fire outbreak at Rumuodumaya in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Friday by the National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services, DCF P.O. Abraham, the Service clarified that the emergency call referenced in the viral video was not made to the Federal Fire Service.

The agency also stated that it does not operate a fire station in Rumuodumaya, explaining that its operational presence in Rivers State is located at the Federal Secretariat Complex along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

According to the statement, the Federal Fire Service, as a humanitarian emergency response agency established by law, does not demand or receive payment as a condition for responding to fire emergencies.

“The Federal Fire Service does not demand or receive payment as a condition for responding to fire incidents. Emergency response is a statutory responsibility of the Service, and our officers are professionally trained and guided by this mandate,” the statement read.

The Service stressed that members of the public are never required to make any payment before firefighters are deployed to protect lives and property.

While noting that it could not speak on behalf of any other emergency organisation that may have been contacted, the agency maintained that requesting money before, during or after responding to an emergency is neither its policy nor operational practice.

The Fire Service expressed sympathy to victims of the Rumuodumaya fire incident, acknowledging the losses suffered by those affected.

It also urged members of the public to ensure that emergency calls are directed to the appropriate agencies, noting that timely communication is essential for effective emergency response.

For fire and related emergencies, the agency advised the public to use the National Emergency Number, 112, or the Federal Fire Service emergency line, 08032003557, for prompt assistance. It also encouraged residents to contact the nearest Federal Fire Service station where the agency has operational coverage.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, property and the environment, the Service said it would continue to strengthen emergency response, fire prevention, public education and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The agency further urged Nigerians to verify information before attributing allegations to the Federal Fire Service, emphasizing the need for responsible dissemination of information to promote public trust and safety.
