The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an adjustment to the timetable for the submission of political parties’ registers of members as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The Commission disclosed this in a statement issued after a meeting with political parties on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, where concerns were raised over the earlier timeline set for the exercise.
According to the statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission agreed to align the submission period with the 21 days stipulated under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
INEC stated that political parties are now free to fix the dates of their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026, provided they comply with the legal requirement.
The Commission emphasised that party membership registers must be submitted not later than 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries.
As a result, INEC announced that the final deadline for the submission of party membership registers has been extended from April 21 to May 10, 2026.
The electoral body urged all political parties to adhere strictly to the revised timeline to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
