Dangote Plans $17bn Refinery In Kenya

By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, Africa’s richest man, has revealed plans to build 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery to process crude oil in Kenya, showing preference to site the refinery in Mombasa.

In an interaction with Financial Times, Dangote explained that the deeper sea port makes Mombasa more suitable than Tanzania, where an earlier proposal was not successful. Dangote estimated the project will cost between $15 billion and $17 billion.

The refinery is the same size and operational capacity as the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Dangote indicated that the project depends on the approval of President William Ruto.
