One Injured as IED Explodes Under Vehicle in Lagos Market, Police Confirm Area Safe

One person was injured on Monday after an Improvised Explosive Device planted under a vehicle exploded at the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos State.

Fatai Tijani, Lagos State Commissioner of Police confirmed the incident on 22 June 2026 while addressing journalists at the scene after a sweep by security operatives.

Tijani said police received reports of the explosion and immediately deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal operatives to cordon off and secure the area.

“We promptly deployed our EOD team after receiving reports of an explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched,” he said.

Preliminary findings showed that the explosion was caused by an IED placed beneath the passenger side of the vehicle. The device detonated when the engine was started.

“The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side. It exploded when the vehicle was started,” Tijani explained.

One person sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. The victim is in stable condition. After a detailed sweep by EOD experts, no additional explosive devices were discovered.

The commissioner urged traders and residents in the commercial area to remain calm and resume normal activities. He said remnants of the device had been recovered for forensic examination as investigations continue.

He also urged the public to disregard rumours of widespread insecurity in Lagos, describing them as false and misleading.
