Delta Youths Chase Herders from Community

By Ikugbadi Oluwasegun

Youths from the Delta community of Igbide in Isoko South local government area of the state have chased Herders rearing cattle in the community, asking them to relocate as a result of the continuous destruction of crops on their farmlands.

The youths who came out in their numbers on Friday morning, were riding on motorcycles as they led the Herders and their cattle from the community to the boundary between the neighboring community before sending out a note of warning to the Herders to steer clear and not to return to the community.

When contacted on the reasons behind the sacking of the Herders, the community president general Mr. Felix Ejiro said the decision was strictly for security reasons as there have been a series of confrontations with the Herders after several invasions of their farmlands before the decision was reached.

According to him, the decision was a collective one and not on ethnic grounds because the Herders have been leading their cattle to ravage their farmlands for years without remorse from the Herders.

It will be recalled that the Delta community of Ohorie had last month staged a protest over the invasion of their farmlands by Herders, while also alleging that Herders also rape their women on their farms.
