The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has alleged vandalism during the invasion of its national secretariat in Abuja by suspected hoodlums, describing it as a breach of due process.
Kayode Agbeyangi, NURTW General Secretary, said that a former union president stormed the office around 7.00a.m., allegedly acting on a court judgment without prior notice, disrupting operations and preventing staff from resuming work.
Agbeyangi said the action was unlawful, stressing that due legal procedures were not followed. He disclosed that the union has filed an appeal and secured a stay of execution on the judgment.
He also alleged that properties, including items from a training centre within the complex, were vandalised and carted away. He noted that multiple cases involving the union remain pending before the National Industrial Court.
Despite ongoing litigation, Agbeyangi said the union had maintained peace since 2023 through reconciliation efforts, warning that the invasion threatens that stability.
Meanwhile, Musiliu Akinsanya, NURTW National President, described the incident as a “forceful takeover,” insisting he was not a party to the judgment being enforced.
He said the ruling has been appealed, with a stay of execution already in place, and urged members to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding as security agencies take control of the situation.
